The City View Apartments is a heavy timber building that is sponsored by the ICA to house artists and writers in an inspiring environment within South Boston. The project features a residence tower with individual units facing the Boston skyline as well as shared spaces like kitchens, dining spaces, and meeting rooms. On the lower levels the artists and writers in residence host their work within the galleries and give lectures in the auditorium. Additionally, there is a neighborhood marketplace and café to help alleviate the lack of grocery stores in South Boston and bring the public to the site. Beyond the building there are multiple outdoor areas to accommodate events as well as general cafe and market usage.
Wood is a central material within this building. Not only does it create a great environment to live and work in, but it also cuts down on the carbon footprint of the building. The heavy timber construction is celebrated by being exposed in many different areas of the building, which includes the beams and columns, market skylights, and the underside of the CLT floor slabs.
